Project Overview
Anemoi Energy Storage (Anemoi) is a 200 MW / 400 MWh state-of-the-art battery energy storage system that provides clean, firm capacity to the ERCOT electricity system. It is ideally located on roughly 13 acres of land near Edinburg, Texas, where it interconnects near critical transmission infrastructure, adjacent to the AEP Pomelo 345 kV substation. This facility in Hidalgo County, on the Mexican border northwest of McAllen, began operations in summer 2024. Anemoi is helping grid operators combat the effects of more frequent extreme weather events by increasing capacity on the grid and in the region.
Anemoi enhances grid reliability by drawing and storing energy from the grid during off-peak periods and releasing it back to the grid when energy demand is at its highest. The battery participates in the marketplace as a “merchant project,” competing with all other generation sources to provide the lowest cost for ratepayers.
The facility’s position near critical energy infrastructure in the region, and the project’s flexibility to perform additional grid services, is enabling a more efficient grid for Hidalgo County. Modernizing the grid to improve resilience in turn improves quality of life and regional economic development, enhancing prosperity for the community and Texas.
